The Rebecca Katherine/Katherine Spencer Project (RK/KS) is a photographic exploration and appropriation of "The Idealized Female." Our method is to use the form of avant-garde fashion photography to depict women in non-traditional ways. This collaboration between model/muse and photographer subverts the traditional power dynamic present in fashion photography. The model is free to express herself in front of a photographer who is not judging or directing her as a female commodity.
We are interested in re-understanding visually, politically, philosophically and psychologically the relationships between sexuality and power, performance and reality, artist and muse. It is our hope to challenge conventions of gender in terms of established hierarchical modalities and the concept and constraints of beauty. As women, we struggle to maintain our integrity despite the confines of the male gaze. In this project we seek to showcase women as human beings in their full potential. Serving as our own subjects, we speak to our experiences of feeling human and being considered female.
